Some Sunsets Aren't So Pretty
Three months huh? Wait a minute… What was all that “post at least once a month” talk?

from Dumb & Dumber
Well, sadly it’s related to my own personal work life as my team and I at Glitch had to go through the unpleasant process of basically sunsetting our platform. There’s an official blog post about the decision and even though the site is still technically alive (and maybe there’s a future somewhere down the line for it), the essence has been ripped out and it just plain sucks.
This blog was created using Glitch along with over 260 other apps and websites just in my account. We had literal millions of users that ranged over all skill levels, from the first-time coders through the top teams at the biggest tech companies, building thousands of projects every day! It was truly a beautiful space on the internet that I was super proud to be a part of building for over the last eight years.
I had the privilege of working for Glitch basically from the start (when I started at Fog Creek in 2017 it was a side project called GoMix and HyperDev before officially becoming Glitch and officially launching in 2018). My role was in Operations for a large part of that time and because of that I got to know every single employee that was ever with the company. I was in awe of what my coworkers could do and the skills they possessed. They were also so kind, generous, and truly wanted to make, and help others make, the “good internet”.
I’ll be forever thankful for everyone involved as not only did they help build an amazing product, but they also helped me numerous times along the way. I would not be where I am today without their help, assistance, and encouragement. I could probably type on for days about each one of them and their impact (to be honest I actually DID do that- this is a third version of this. I just didn’t know if anybody wanted their names mentioned [first draft] then could I do it without names if not [second draft], then that felt really long so maybe just do a quick but honest and to the point post about it- which this draft started out as, but maybe I’m getting a little longer than I anticipated).
In any case, I don’t know what the future of Glitch will be (like officially as I still work at Fastly who still owns it)- but I do know what it was and the positive impact it left in this world. I do encourage everyone though to still go out and try to make the good internet yourself. Share and express yourself outside of the walled gardens of our typical social media.
Now back to the initial line- three months in between posts?!? Yes, yes… well for one it was the aforementioned three drafts of this (which I guess was a little cathartic to do at least). Then I had to find a new hosting platform, which took a little time getting up, rerouting the domain, and then figuring out how to edit it properly going forward. But, all that is taken care of now and we’re ok… so stay tuned as we’ll get back into the fun stuff going forward… and yes, on a monthly basis!
